Macdonald Burlington Hotel

I have stayed here on business a number of times but never booked through Skoosh before. The hotel is OK but with a little more effort on the part of management it could be great. If Birmingham gets any hot nights, the rooms become pretty unbearably overheated and I have yet to stay in a room where the air conditioning actually works. The fan comes on and recirculates the hot air but that's all. The restaurant is OK but the menu is a bit samey - fine if you like steak which they do very well but not much else. The breakfasts are the main plus point - they use Scottish bacon, sausages and black pudding which are all fantastic and they actually bring the toast to you. You don't have to make it yourself! The location is very central and handy for New Street Station.

The hotel is very good. Check-in was fast and efficient the staff friendly and aproachable. Our room was very nice great decor and huge bed, huge room. On the first evening we ate dinner at the hotel and the food and wine were of an excellent standard. The restaurant staff were very efficient, friendly and attentive. We had a couple of snagging points, the shower in our room didn't work and they could not fix it over the weekend we were there, but forgot to tell us! A bedside light bulb blew out and they replaced this but broke the light in the process. Be aware, the bar has no draught beers and the drinks are ridiculously over priced. Some rooms overlook the bus station and are very noisy, but if you want peace and quiet, don't book a city centre hotel! Overall I reccommend this very good hotel.

when checked into room, found out that the toilet did not flush. Reported problem to Reception immediately. After 40 mins, there was no follow up and reverted to Reception - they did not have a record of my earlier report ! Had to move room. This 2nd room was ok except for slight musty smell in room - which appeared to be as a result of damp carpet (leak underneath the carpet ??).
Used one of the Gents bathrooms off the main stairwell - very musty/mal-odourous.
However, the building interior itself is fantastic.
Food service was good.
Location is very central.
Overall impression is that this could be a very good hotel if there was an extra 5% effort put in, but I was disappointed because of this, especially at the price paid.

Great location and rooms are recently refurbished so modern bathrooms and good aircon. Hotel is still pretty grand and impressive and couldn't fault the staff.

Everything was going great until breakfast on the Sunday morning - queue to get in to the dining room (despite being fairly early in the morning) and the continental breakfast consisted of apple juice, cold tea and cereal (cheese, ham, pastries, orange juice, yoghurts etc had all gone). Despite promises that this would be replenished, an hour later and it wasn't. By the time we left there was an even bigger queue and more unhappy guests.

So, in summary, the hotel is great value and a good choice but get a rate without breakfast to ensure a hassle free stay!.
