Yes, I would recommned the hotel. Just not the beach. While they are beautiful from the air, the beach has been mostly washed away from the last hurricane and there is very little to enjoy. A few well used palapas are a welcome site. I just wished that there was more! With that being said, I loved the rooms, the beds were very comfortable, the deck was very nice, we used the spa services and give high marks. Staff was friendly and helpful. The food was good but often on the cool/cold side. The pool area was popular with folks putting their towels out early to reserve spots, then coming back around 11 or so to enjoy the pool. The shade went first of course, leaving the rest of us with little to choose from. Music a little loud. Good value for the money! Close to town.

We spent 3 nights here. The room that we had reserved was not available so they upgraded us to a better room, which was nice of them. But the room was not clean, the restroom and shower were not clean, there was a dead roach in the bath tub. Management was not very nice and understanding. It took many phone calls to finally get us moved to another room. Generally the service was not that great. They were very eager to get people in to their "vaccation club" which is their way of timeshare. They were very pushy in that way. The hotel itself was beautiful, and was located in a good location. The pools were nice and the food was not bad. I don't think that I will stay there again.

The property was most impressive and the staff's attention to customer service was excellent. Room was better than expected (hot tub and flat screen tv) and offered great views even though it was not located oceanside. However, even as a New Yorker who is used to price gouging and overpaying for things (and who has stayed in many 4 and 5 star hotels worldwide), the Gran Melia took overcharging for basic items to unprecedented levels -- leaving a bitter taste of exploitation in one's mouth. For example, a half hour of internet service cost $10 and required use of a rudimentary pass card system. Beverages from the lobby store (h20, gatorade, etc.) were triple price. A box of crackers was $10 in the same store. I only dined at one of the restaurants (the sushi joint) which was pretty below average. I don't mean to slam the place--it may just be that I am not the resort type of person at the end of the day.
