Reviews Of Hotel 71, Chicago,

Review by: M, Lansing, United States

I would not recommend this hotel. From the outside and walking into the lobby the hotel looked great. Once in the room, the water was ice cold losing pressure every 2 minutes. There was a lot of noise in the hall all night and when i let the staff know about it, they said that "its gonna be loud there is a wedding." I understand that it is loud when a wedding is in a hotel, but that doesn't mean an individual guest can't have a pleasant stay or at least an attempt made to correct the complaint. Returning in the evening from being out, we were met with dozens of drunk students being attended to by not only paramedics but the hotel security staff as well. Again noise was continuous all night, we were able to listen to the conversation of the room next to us all night from our room as well as halfway down the hall as we left to check out. Also the elevator took forever, at one point we waited 20 minutes on the 26th floor before finally walking down the stairs. I liked the location of the hotel, but the hastle was not worth the price of the room.

The rooms were well appointed, especially the bathrooms, beautiful. The lack of an internal restaurant is a bit of a pain. Also, the lobby is a bit cold in environment, too hot in temperature. Great location!!!

The location is perfect, and we were upgraded to a river view which was fantastic! The staff was excellent, and the room was large and very clean. The bathroom was also large and appeared to be recently renovated. Beds were nice, although not the pillow-top found in many hotels today. Biggest negative was hallways and elevators were not renovated. So there was poor lighting - esp in the hallways; and a lot of wear and tear in the hallways and doors. The elevators felt like one was on a train. But once in the room, it felt much nicer!

The hotel is conveniently located, and the staff were pleasant. However, the property is undergoing renevations and so all but one of the elevators were out of service, plus there was some construction noise even early in the morning and quite late into the evening. The first room did not have working wireless internet access, but the staff was responsive to my request for help, and moved me into another, nicer room with working internet while I was at dinner. The water pressure in the shower was quite weak in both rooms and the bathtowels were small and threadbare. The bed linens were also not as nice as I would expect from a boutique hotel. The workout room has an awesome view of the river, but the cardio machines were pretty old and not well maintained. The rooms were clean. The breakfast I ordered was overpriced, as you'd expect, and the fruit was underripe, but the pastries and coffee were quite good. You can't order the night before, and they warn it will take a half hour for food to arrive, but mine came in about 20 minutes. All in all, I've had better at the same price point, but I expect the property will get on its feet after the construction is completed. I'm fairly certain that they'll need some new management, also, but I bet they're aware of that.

When I checked in on 11/7/07, around 4:00 pm in the afternoon, the airline had misplaced my luggage. I asked for the concierge hoping to get a phone number for Northwest Airlines so I could talk to a human rather than something automated about my luggage. The woman that helped me was absolutely fantastic. She got a human on the phone and although we had to wait while the NW employee tracked things, my luggage was found. The concierge was wonderful and deserves a raise. The hotel was great. The food from room service was great. The location was perfect. All contact I had with staff was exemplary. We had a room overlooking the river and the view was amazing. I will definitely recommend it to my friends. thanks!

The best quality of Hotel 71 was certainly its location, close to prominent Chicago landmarks, and the excellent views it provided. The hotel itself is a little average, yes its clean and the reception is welcoming. However the rooms, although large are basic and seem slightly dated. This left me feeling that the room rate was a bit over the top. The hotel is also minus a bar! Which comes as a suprise in a hotel of this type. People considering this hotel may wish to check if all the lifts are in working order, this was not the case during my stay and although this is not the end of the world it does become frustrating. To summarise the hotel is satisfactory however I will be considering other hotels on my next trip to Chicago which is an excellect city.

The hotel was in prime location, clean, easily accesible to Michigan avenue as well as the loop. The room had a great view of the river, reasonably sized. The business center was available 24 hours a day free of charge. The downside is the elevators were slow, the closet was in the bathroom (!), there was no concierge available to help us (the front desk people did). All in all, the stay was reasonably comfortable given the location.

The hotel is in a very central location with a nice view. The rooms are large and comfortable.

Two negative points: One of two elevator shafts was down our entire stay. The internet access was also unavailable.

The view was amazing and location was ideal. The front desk staff was friendly and courteous. But the elevator was slow and the room as a bit dirty - mystery stains on the blanket. The Hotel 71 website images do not match the quality of the rooms.
