As Cuban/Havana Hotels go, it was great. The staff was friendly, and the rooms were clean. The breakfast buffet was really good as well, better than most in Cuba. The restaurant was only passable at best, and the cafeteria "La Rampa" was also at best mediocre, some items were really over priced at the cafeteria and other weren't, I found that strange. eg: a pizza ranged from $8 to $12 C.U.C, but right across the street they were $3 to $7 CUC, but you could get a hambuger for $4 or a mountain of ice cream for $4, but it was cafeteria style food. The Pool was nice, the "Casa de Habano" in the hotel was one of the largest I found around Havana and had a great selection of single cigars to smoke, including "Behike". The A/C wasnt great in the room. Good place to stay in Havana though.

We are the sort of travellers who avoid large hotels whenever possible, but the history of Tryp Havana Libre enticed us. It was an excellent decision. Although there is a general shabbiness about the corridors (carpets in need of replacement, etc) our room on 21 Floor was a knockout. Almost bigger than our own house, it was clean and had a spectacular view across the bay and old Havana. And then there's the revolutionary relevance of the hotel to imbibe. We loved every minute of our stay. If you are not sympathetic to the predicament of Cuba under the pernicious US embargo, you may find some fault with the place. However, we relished the experience. And the memorial plaque to Irish martyr Bobby Sands and his comrades in nearby Victor Hugo park, was an added discovery that links the shared sentiment of freedom fighters in Cuba and around the world.

Pros: large rooms, buffet breakfast included. Friendly and many taxis in front of the hotel Close ish to old town Havana and plaza de la revolution
Cons: took us an hour to check in minimal staff. Attempted to call from overseas to confirm booking and noone spoke English but in the hotel itself when we got there there were many staff who spoke English Decor deteriorating, no room heatig/cooling.

When we arrived at the Havana Libre, we were told "there was a problem with our floor" and were moved to another hotel, the Melia Cohiba. This was disappointing however the hotel they put us in wasn't a complete dive - it was actually OK.
