Recommend to others? No. 1. Our bed was far from comfortable and there seemed to be no way to regulate the room temperature. 2. The breakfast service left much to be desired. The young men seemed not to be very interested in their work, leaving the older ladies to be the ones who really provided the service. 3. The map on the web was not really helpful in relating its actual location to the Underground station at Lancaster Gate.
Value for money? We received much better service and accommodation for lesser price than that charged at the Columbia.
Expectations met? No.

We had stayed at the Columbia years ago when it was still a US Military hotel, so decided to visit again. As before the biggest selling point is the location on Bayswater Road, across from Hyde Park. Bus connection right around the corner, and tube one block away. Hotel is old but clean, staff are friendly and helpful. Continental breakfast included with other selections available at added price...reasonable, good value, and served quickly. The only drawback was no air conditioning, but only a problem in mid summer. Would go back again. Not flash, but a good place to stay to visit London.

Stayed 8 nights in late January. Somewhat dated and worn, but very clean. Complementary wireless Internet service a great bonus. Friendly, extremely cooperative staff.
Surprisingly nice-sized rooms for London. Smallish bathroom, but nice sized tub. Unable to control heat, but problem was solved by having staff turn it off, which was fine for remaining six days. Lack of a circulating fan could be problematic during warm summer nights.
Basic continental breakfast, but very reasonable prices and nice selection for those desiring a large breakfast. Nice selection of pubs and restaurants nearby.
Great location for Tube (short walk to Lancaster Gate station on Central Line) and buses to/from Oxford St. (94) and Westminster (148) just outside hotel. Very good value for the price. If one is looking for a comfortable, clean, affordable no-frills room, this is the place to stay.
