Reviews Of Algonquin Hotel, New York,

Review by: TDM, Columbus, United States

Depends on their taste.
Unfortnately, historic translated to old with not many amenities.
Hotel was significantly overpriced- probably (hopefully) because of the New York marathon.

Expectations were we needed a room to sleep, so I guess expectations were met.

Actually bed was very comfortable. Staff was friendly (for New York)

On our first night we asked to change rooms. The room was loud with the outside air conditions unit.
The initial room was small and in need of refurbishment.

The second room was a slight improvement, however, there was a constant noise from outside units.

If you want a good night's sleep, do not stay at this hotel!!!

I have stayed here multiple times, but this time was great. I received a corner room that was extra large with a nice view of the city. Staff was helpful and courteous. The only complaint I have is that room service closes at 10:30 on Sunday nights. If you have a flight from the east you can forget getting any food or drinks when you get to the hotel.

All in all I am staying there again this week. Thanks Algonquin.

Our expectations for this hotel were exceeded at every turn. Staying at the Algonquin enhanced our trip to New York City and we will certainly stay here in the future. The front desk staff was very accommodating, we arrived on the red eye flight and got to the hotel @ 8 am, they courteously stowed our luggage and offered the earliest possible check-in. The Algonquin also provided a late check-out and again stored our bags, which allowed us to take advantage of our extra time in the city...priceless.

The location is great--two blocks from Times Square. The staff was helpful, spoke clearly, and were always available. The room (though small by modern standards) was clean and well-appointed. Free wi-fi Internet seemed rare in many of the hotels I considered, but these folks had it. I also appreciated the overall elegance of the surroundings (crown molding, warm colors, ornate fixtures, etc.) that recalled another era, though some people may not prefer that sort of thing. On-site dining seemed pretty expensive, even by mid-town standards, so I skipped that. I would definitely stay there again.

It can be dicey to stay at one of New York's older hotels, but the Algonquin does it right. While maintaining its historical reputation with its famous Roundtable Bar and original Art Deco lobby, it meets the new world head-on: pillow-top beds, remodeled bathrooms, plasma TVs, terry robes, and Starbucks coffee for early morning risers are some of the modern conveniences. Its central location makes the hotel stay-worthy, and I'd return there in a New York minute.

We stayed at the Algonquin for a weekend trip to NYC. I read great reviews online and found them to be true. The hotel staff is very friendly, the rooms are nice and clean, the hotel has character and the location is convenient (two blocks to the F, V, B, D train line). I would definitely recommend this hotel to others, especially if you can get a good rate.

If you love history and literature it's THE place to stay. In addition, I was a female walking alone at night from Grand Cental and felt very safe. Far enough from Times Square to escape the noise but close enough for an easy walk to all the action. I also walked to St. Patrick's Cathedral, Herald Square, a pier for a harbor tour, and Times Square. Close to diners, bakeries, and Starbucks for a quick breakfast. All the gorgeous charm of a historic building (wide baseboards, crown moulding, heavy wood doors, old tiles) but all the best modern conveniences (WiFi, great water pressure in the shower, luxurious bed linens, large flat screen TV, hair dryer, really nice shampoo and lotion, ample space for big suitcases). The bellhop was both knowledgeable and charming. Staying here made me feel like a movie star!
